Recall that in order to protect your privacy (HIPAA rules), it is no longer a regular practice for healthcare facilities to notify your church or priest that you are in the hospital unless directly instructed to do so by you or your family. Yet we know how important it is for you to have spiritual and sacramental support while hospitalized. Here are some things you can do:
- Have someone, a family member or friend, to give us call beforehand, so we know when you will be in the hospital.
- During the admission process, be sure to provide both your religion and the name of your church. If the hospital fails to ask this question, inform your nurse of both your religion and your parish affiliation.
- If you are hospitalized, ask a member of your healthcare team to contact your clergy or ask to see the chaplain. The hospital spiritual care team will contact us .
