This colorful and very beautiful feast has its origins in Peru. It celebrates the faith of people, often poor and oppressed, that they are never alone or abandoned, but that God constantly works miracles on their behalf. This faith found its expression in a picture of Christ’s crucifixion that remained standing on the ruin of a Church wall after an earthquake had devastated all other structures in the area. An event of the 18th century stayed with the Peruvian people and gave them courage to withstand all sorts of disasters in life with the conviction that God, the God of miracles, would not abandon them.
