Upon the death of Pope St. John XXIII, Pope St. Paul VI took up the work of guiding the work of the Church’s reform at the Second Vatican Council.
St. Oscar Arnulfo Romero, bishop and martyr. In 1977, Mons. Oscar Romero was chosen to be the Archbishop of San Salvador. At the time, the Central American country of El Salvador was caught up in a bloody and seemingly endless civil war. Archbishop Romero prophetically denounced the injustic-es of the country’s rulers and the violence against the poor by both National Guard and guerrilla forces. He was killed by an assas-sin’s bullet as he celebrated Mass on March 24, 1980.
May we find in both these saints powerful in-tercessors and clear models of holiness and courage for our times.
