Meet Dieufait Jean Pierre and his son, Kensley. Dieufait has come from Haiti to care for his wife, Jozelaine who is, in a sense trapped in Backus Hospital. You can see their full story on our parish web - page. Joselaine has suffered an infection that put her in a coma for two months and developed into a life-threatening sepsis. Against the odds, Jozelaine recovered, but the sepsis has forced doctors to amputate her fingers and her legs below the knee. It has also left her without kidney function. Jozelaine has been in the hospital for two years now, primarily because, as an immigrant seeking asylum, she does not qualify for supportive health services. Other than her husband, she has no income and no local family support …..except maybe us, the Catholic community. The Haitian community at St. Mary Church has organized to host a fundraising supper for the Jean Pierre family on Sunday, March 31st at noon

While a Sunday luncheon of Haitian food would be good, a banquet of international food would be even better! We are calling all cooks of our many national-ities to organize and prepare food for an international festival to raise needed funds for Jozelaine and her family. Please call or e-mail the parish office to get on our list of international chefs!

Donations for Jozelaine can be sent to a special fund, c/o Norwich Human Services 100 Broadway, Norwich CT. 06360. If you want to get involved in forming a large circle of support for the Jean Pierre family, let us know. “The Emma Lazarus Society”, a broad based support group has already begun. Our next meeting is at St. Mary Church, Monday evening, March 8 at 6 p.m.
