Polish Blessing of the Baskets – St. Joseph Church on Holy Saturday April 20th 10AM and Noon
Swieconka (sh-vee-en-soon-kah) is one of the most enduring and beloved Polish traditions. Baskets containing a sampling of Easter foods are brought to church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. These baskets usually contain a loaf of bread to remind us of Jesus, the risen Lord, eggs which are a sign of hope and resurrection, horseradish to remind us of the bitterness of Jesus’ Passion, ham and sausage, joyful signs of God’s generosity, a symbolic Paschal Lamb in the form of cake or butter, and salt as a reminder to all followers of Christ that they are “salt of the earth”. The baskets are lined in linens and may even have a bit of ribbon or greenery and even a candle included.
