The Bright Season of Anticipation

On Sunday, December 1, a new season of prayer begins with the First Sunday of Advent. In Advent and in the coming year, we will the Gospel mostly from St. Matthew’s accounts. Advent will invite us to long more deeply for the coming of Christ in His three comings: His future coming as our Lord and Judge His mystical coming in our time and place His first coming by His birth as Mary’s child.

Here are events and devotions that will take place in our cluster this Advent:

The First Sunday of Advent, December 1: The blessing of Advent wreaths and the lighting of the first candle. All are invited to bring their home Advent wreaths to Mass for blessing this Sunday. Prepare the way by lighting your Advent wreath each evening in a moment of family prayer. During 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Mary Church we celebrate the Rite of Acceptance to the Order of Catechumens. Several inquirers will be welcomed to the Church as catechumens who formally begin their journey to Christ through Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Patronal Feast of the United States of America. Because Dec. 8, the usual day for this feast, falls on a Sunday, the Immaculate Conception is celebrated the following day, but not as a day of obligation. Nevertheless, we pray for our nation and honor our Blessed Mother:

8:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church              5:30 p.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Church

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas December 11, “Las Mananitas”: a prayerful celebration in anticipation of the great feast: 8:00 to 10:30 p.m. At St. Mary Church December 12: Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 7:00 p.m., followed by a reception/ fiesta. At the Cathedral of St. Patrick.

Advent Sacrament of Penance: There is no better way to prepare the way for the Lord’s coming than by self-examination, repentance, confession and forgiveness. Be sure to go to confession this Advent.

Here are some special confession times: Friday, Dec. 13, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 14, 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.
